SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS (The Highlands)

San Cristóbal sits in a gorgeous highland valley at 7300 feet in elevation, surrounded by pine and oak forests. The cobbled streets and markets are easy to explore. Circled by traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages, San Cristóbal is at the heart of one of the most deeply rooted indigenous areas in Mexico. The indigenous villages of San Juan Chamala and Zinacantán can be easily explored in 1 day. And the reserves of Huitepec and Moxviquil invite us to observe such species as the mountain trogon, pink-headed warbler, cinnamon bellied flower-piercer, blue-throated motmot, spot-crowned woodcreeper, scaled antpitta, band-backed wren, and many others.
